Canal clean up helps make Brighouse beautiful

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up the area around Brighouse canal.

Despite the rain the sixth canal clean up in took place last week.

Local businesses and residents have worked hard over the past few years to make the most of one of Brighouse’s key features, the Calder and Hebble Navigation, which runs through the town centre.

Lidia Shinwell, director of Prego Restaurant and event organiser said: “This clean-up is a great example of the broken window theory.

“The amount of litter cleared from the banks and surrounding areas has dramatically reduced over the past few years. It’s great to see that the handywork of all these volunteers is paying off.

“Lucy from the Canal and River Trust attended bringing litter pickers, gloves, buoyancy aids and other essential equipment for gardening.

“Sainsbury’s in Brighouse donated drinks and snacks and the Calder Navigation Society brought their barge to help clear rubbish.

“We also had volunteer help from Jackie at Incredible Edible, Tom and Jane Ratcliffe the organisers for the Brighouse arts festival along with many local residents.”
