Choir on song for celebrations

The first of a series of events to celebrate a memorable milestone in the life of a Brighouse church was staged on Sunday evening.

Over the coming months a wide ranging number of events have been lined up to celebrate the centenary of St John the Divine, Rastrick.

The first of these was held on Sunday when composer and regular organist Gordon Bamforth had composed a new setting of Choral Evensong especially for the Rastrick Singers, which is made up of singers from both St John’s and St Matthew’s, to sing.

He had originally planned for the song to be performed at Huddersfield Parish Church but decided to perform it at St John’s as part of the celebrations.

“I am very pleased with the way it has gone.

“This group of singers are a delight to work with and they have responded to it very well indeed and I think the congregation have thoroughly enjoyed it too,” he said.

The service was conducted by the Vicar of Rastrick, Rev Marion Russell, who said she was delighted the centenary celebrations had begun with the song.
