Council building to undergo revamp

Princess Buildings, Crossley Street, Halifax, will undergo demolition, extension and refurbishment of council offices and education facilities, after Calderdale Council Planning Committee passed the proposed application.

The existing vacant retail ground floor shop is proposed for a change of use.

No letters of objection were received.

New design plans include a contemporary extension to the courtyard and the replacement of the 1960s extension with a modern development using ashlar stone and blue slate to match the existing building.

A planning officer told the committee the architectural detail of the original facade in a modern context sits well with the traditional 19th Century.

Councillor Robert Thornber (Con, Ryburn), said: “I’m glad the council is investing in and restoring its buildings and not putting it up for sale at auction.”

Councillor John Peel (Con, Sowerby Bridge) said he is looking forward to seeing the finished build.

All councillors voted in favour of the application and it will now be referred to the Secretary of State for official approval.
