Driver in stolen Calderdale car jumps into river to try and escape from police

A driver of a stolen car tried to flee from police by jumping into a river running through Calderdale.

West Yorkshire Police's Road Policing Unit shared pictures of the driver's very wet and muddy shoes after his bid for freedom.

The white Fiat had been stolen and had false plates installed onto it.

Officers spotted the vehicle in Ripponden this morning.

In a desperate attempt to avoid capture he jumped into the river but the police unit soon caught up to him.

Posting the images on Twitter the road policing team said: "Outstanding stolen vehicle bearing false plates was sighted this morning in Ripponden.

"Driver made the decision to run from the car into a river. He quickly regretted that decision and is now cold and wet and on his way to the cells. Vehicle recovered for CSI."
