Man admits kitchen knife wounding on Christmas Day

A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm after an incident in Elland on Christmas Day.

Matthew Shaw, of Southgate, Elland, appeared in custody before a judge at Bradford Crown Court and admitted wounding Mark Smorthit.

Shaw also pleaded guilty to possessing a kitchen knife in Southgate and Recorder David Ake told him there was a real issue about whether he should be classified as a dangerous young man.

It is understood that Shaw had only been released from a previous prison sentence on December 16 and the latest offence took place in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Recorder Ake remanded Shaw back into custody and told him that a pre-sentence report would be prepared by the probation service.

Shaw is due to be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on January 29.
