An ambulance arrived at the scene but the victim, believed to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead.

The male driver fled the scene and but later arrested and remains in police custody.

Halifax and Elland fire crews were called to secure the scene as only three of the Volkswagen’s three air bags had deployed.

Town centre roads including Commercial Street, Crown Street and Albert Street were cordoned off for the rest of the evening whilst police carried out investigations.

West Yorkshire Police is due to issue a witness appeal later this morning.
