Police appeal: newsagent fends off armed would-be robber

A newsagent fended off a armed would-be robber and sent him packing empty-handed.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident which happened at D.M & J.L Sykes, Elizabeth Street, Elland, at 5.10am today (Monday).

The victim was alone in the shop when the suspect went in holding a knife, with a five to six inch blade.

The brave shopkeeper grappled with the suspect and in the process of the fight managed to press the panic alarm. The suspect then ran off.

The suspect is described as white, 19-years-old, 5ft 7ins tall and of a slim build. He was wearing a grey hoodie-type top with the hood pulled up, grey jeans and used a scarf to cover his face.

Nothing was taken as a result of the attack and the shopkeeper was uninjured.
