Audrey Guvenc, NPT Coordinator from Brighouse Police Station, said the incident had caused distress to the family and urged anyone with information to come forward.

She said: “Many people leave items at gravesides, often as tokens of love and remembrance to those sadly missed. This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and something we take very seriously.

“I would encourage anyone that has suffered similar thefts to report this to Police via 101 or on-line @ www.westyorkshire.police.uk/reportcrime and anyone visiting the cemeteries to call police should they witness anyone acting suspiciously.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact PCSO Brian Mardell at Brighouse Street Police Station on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and quote reference number 13150140466.
