A passing policeman, PC Mick Garner, rescued the only occupant from the vehicle - the driver who is believed to be in his 20s.

PC Garner stayed with the man and gave initial first aid before the arrival of paramedics.

The driver was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he is receiving treatment for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Chief Superintendent Dickie Whitehead praised PC Garner for his brave actions and said that he possibly saved the driver’s life.

Chf Supt Whitehead said: “The actions of this officer in putting his own safety aside to rescue the driver from a burning vehicle may well have saved the man’s life.

“Being a police officer is a unique role with officers quite often having to make split second decisions in challenging situations. This incident is just one example of the bravery and dedication shown on a daily basis by our officers across West Yorkshire to keep our communities safe.”

One lane of the motorway was closed for several hours whilst accident investigation work was carried out.

Crews from Halifax and Huddersfield attended the incident.

Any witnesses are asked to contact the Western Area Roads Policing Team via 101.
