Around £46,000 was donated to the Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund between the mum-of-two’s death last April and the final stages of the year.

Now, however, a flurry of generous donations over the festive period has taken the amount in the fund to nearly £74,000.

Talented young people in Leeds have until January 30 to apply for grants from the fund, which was established by Mrs Maguire’s family.

They hope the grants will help recipients fulfil their potential in performing arts fields such as drama and dance.

Grants are being made available to individuals living in Leeds and aged between 11 and 18.

Support is also on offer to community groups.

Speaking recently about the fund, the Maguire family said: “We want to look for the good that can come out of this tragedy and focus on what was important to Ann.

“This was about helping others, especially young people, in developing their potential.”

Mrs Maguire, 61, from Moortown, was fatally stabbed by pupil Will Cornick as she taught a lesson at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Halton Moor.

Cornick, 16, was sentenced to life in prison in November.
