Event proves tattielating and s-mashing for crowds

The event, held at Mytholmroyd Cricket club, attracted crowds throughout the day and organisers said many visitors were willing to try new things.

Around 38 varieties of super spuds, both organic and non-organic, were on the menu, and visitors enjoyed browsing some of the unique, unusual varieties on offer, as well as the old favourites.

Classics including Lady Christl made an appearance, but new varieties including Milva and Alouette were also available.

Gordon Nelson, of Calder Valley Organic Gardeners, said: “People wanted to try new things and we had around 12 to 15 varieties we had never had before.

“Numbers of visitors were down a little on previous years and that could be due to the flooding of allotments.

“But it was a successful day in spite of that.”

And a crop of special tatties could now sprout up over the Calder Valley as people begin to chit their seed potatoes, before planting them in early April.

The spud-tastic event also included children’s activities, stalls, and some tasty food and drink at the cafe.
