Fallen soldier to be remembered

A charity football match at the beginning of November will remember a soldier who died of his wounds after being injured by an explosion while serving in Afghanistan.

Two teams from Todmorden’s Jack’s House pub will contest the Jack Stanley Trophy, kicking off at 2pm on Sunday, November 6, on a pitch at Todmorden High School, with proceeds going to a project being worked on in conjunction with the Todmorden branch of the Royal British Legion.

Corporal Jack Stanley, who was 26, of the Queen’s Royal Hussars, was caught in the blast from an improvised explosive device while on patrol near Lashkar Gah in Afghanistan on February 3, 2012, and after bravely battling his injuries for two months died on April 8, 2012.

Jack was from nearby Littleborough but went to Todmorden High School and later did much of his socialising at the pub, which is in Burnley Road, Todmorden.

A corner of the pub features a specially-framed display of photographs remembering him, and a Jack Stanley Trophy was played for once as a Twenty 20 cricket match.

Now a Jack’s House Over 30s side will play Jack’s House Under 30s at football as it was felt it was time to dust down the trophy and make it a regular fundraising event, said landlady Sue Landale, who runs the pub with partner Mark Arrowsmith.

“When Jack died we bought a trophy but it was only played for once.

“We decided to build a day around a fundraising match for the trophy and will also be running a few other things to boost the total on the day,” said Sue.

She called on any old players wanting to take part on the day to get in touch on 01706 819192.
