Entries are displayed throughout the village and visitors can vote for their favourites. Prizes will be handed out for makers of the most popular scarecrows.

Some scarecrows will also have a wooden spoon with a letter painted on it and to enter free £100 voucher prize draw, people will be asked to guess the anagram of this year’s word on the theme of ‘songs’.

There are children’s fairground rides on Shaw Lane field and brass bands in the Memorial Park, weather permitting, today and Sunday.

Each year the festival supports local charities, and has raised more than £50,000 to date.
