Firefighters tackle latest blaze in Centre Vale Park

Firefighters were called to another fire in Todmorden’s Centre Vale Park yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

It is the ninth fire in the park since the beginning of June.

An appliance from Todmorden was called to the woods in the park at around 1pm, where a tree had been deliberately set alight near the John Fielden statue.

Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and managed to stop it from spreading.

They left at around 1.30pm.

Watch commander Geoff Shaw, of Todmorden Fire Station, said: “These are nuisance fires that the police and fire service take very seriously.

“While we are dealing with them, we are unavailable to deal with more serious incidents.”

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and dial 999 if they see anything.
