Dom Georgiou, who plays for Old Brodleians, sustained a fractured vertebrae in the Yorkshire One derby match against Heath RUFC on November 12.

He spent the night in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and was moved to Leeds General Infirmary the following morning for an MRI scan and to determine the best treatment.

He is likely to be out of action for some months, but friends and Calderdale’s rugby community have rallied round Dom to bring a smile to his face.

Writing on a Go Fund Me page, which has raised nearly £4,000 and smashed the £2,000 target set, friend Laurie Hamer said Dom will only receive statutory sick pay.

He said: “I thought it would be a nice idea for us all to get behind Dom and show him our support by contributing whatever we can to allow him to carry on living a normal lifestyle financially despite his difficulties.

“This is a very depressing time for him as he has very little movement. As we all know, Christmas is around the corner, which is the toughest part of the year financially anyway and I want my mate to feel like this injury isn’t going to hold him back for the festive period.

“For those of you that know Dom personally, if any of his mates were in his situation he would do exactly the same thing.

“The money is just to allow him to get out of the house and enjoy the Christmas period without worrying about finances. We’re not asking for a lot for him, just whatever you feel nessesary to show your support.”
