Get ready for outdoor fun

The chance to try your hand at a host of outdoor and some indoor activities - or just enjoy the beautiful grounds of one of Todmorden’s landmark buildings - arrives on Saturday, August 29, when Robinwood Activity Centre invites people to its Dobroyd Castle centre for the annual open day.

Between 10am and 4.30pm there is the chance to try out activities including archery, climbing, tapeze, zip wire, giant swing and a crate challenge at Dobroyd Castle, which is just off Pexwood Road.

There will also be live music to enjoy while you picnic, food available to buy on site and a number of charity stalls to browse.

A bouncy castle and face panting is being laid on for younger visitors and the castle’s main hall will be open for you to look around.

Entry is free but there is a small charge for activities, with the proceeds going to three charities.

These are Derian House children’s hospice and Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team, which the event has previously supported, and this year Endometriosis UK, a charity which helps women with that condition, will also benefit.

Visitors are asked to note that there is no parking on site, except for disabled visitors who have arranged this in advance. This year there is parking available reasonably close by, at Eddingbrook on Bacup Road and at Shade School’s car park off Rochdale Road. The castle can be reached via Pexwood Road or by the route opposite Morrison’s Rochdale Road store and along Dobroyd Road. The park-and-ride scheme run in previous years will not be running this year.

Assistant manager Dan Ward said the team were encouraging people to get there on foot this time and hoped people would enjoy trying out the range of activities on offer or simple enjoy relaxing in the surroundings.

“We have been doing this every year for about six years and we look forward to people joining us for a great family day out,” he said.

The castle was originally a stately built home by John Fielden Jnr, of Todmorden’s cotton dynasty family, in the late 19th century.
