Following thousands of generous donations last year, the Rotary Clubs of Calderdale are once again asking people to give generously to those in need.

Last year’s campaign saw nearly 2,000 shoeboxes filled with gifts, scarves and gloves and the Rotary Club hope that this year’s total will be even more impressive.

Bryan Harkness, the appeal’s Rotary Coordinator, said: “It continues to amaze us that there are so many people in Calderdale who are always prepared to help others and just ‘give that bit more’ to the benefit of the needier in our community.

“Last year’s appeal was fantastic and Rotary hopes this year’s will be a success once again. A tremendous amount of work goes into ensuring every box is packed with appropriate items so that on opening we see nothing but smiles!

“Last year we saw many more companies wanting to join in, so anyone who would like to join in should contact their local rotarian.”

The shoeboxes all go to local people in need, and are distributed across Calderdale by the rotarians.

There are four different types of shoebox: those filled with children’s gifts and toys; those containing toiletries; those with non-perishable food items; and those gifts for keeping warm during winter, such as scarves, gloves and hats.

Last year, 19 schools across the region took part, and this year schools have already started to sign up to help.

Empty shoeboxes can also be collected at a number of supermarkets in the borough.

The supermarkets taking part this year are: Tesco at Brighouse, Halifax and Sowerby Bridge; Morrisons at Elland and Halifax; Asda Halifax; and Harveys of Halifax.
