Heroic fundraisers from across the district strapped on their running shoes to take on the Great North Run for charity.

They joined Mo Farah for the half marathon, which begins in Newcastle and finishes at South Shields.

And NiddValley Running Club member Sam Fugill got closer than most, managing to meet and get a photograph with the great man.

Sam said: “Meeting Mo was brilliant. He was a genuinely nice guy and it was fantastic to meet someone who is such an icon and hero for runners everywhere.”

Chris Lawrence and Neil Jones, both 42 and of Harrogate, ran in giant shoes, dressed as Shoe Barker, the unofficial sponsor of Cancer Research UK.

Zoe Simpson and Holly Gadd, both 24, from Ripon took part. Zoe said: “We ran for Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of my grandad, John Strothard from Tadcaster.”

Halo Hair and Beauty hairdresser Lauren Hewitt-Dawson completed the run and has so far raised more than £800 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“I had a great day and met some wonderful people all out running for good causes. It was a real sense of achievement finishing the run - and raising so much money for charity,” she said.
