Inquest: Coroner records narrative verdict after death of Halifax woman

A coroner has recorded a narrative verdict after an inquest into the death of a Halifax woman who passed away just three days after being admitted to Calderdale Royal Hospital with a stomach ulcer.

The hearing into the death of June Parkes, 68, of Copley, heard today (Wednesday) she was taken by ambulance to the hospital after collapsing and vomiting blood on December 15, 2014.

But after her condition worsened on December 17, a decision was made to transfer her to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, where she died less than half an hour after arriving.

Assistant coroner Mary Burke recorded a narrative verdict at the inquest in Bradford today.

She said steps if were taken to admit her to hospital earlier or to transfer her to Huddersfield at an earlier stage, her death on December 17 could have been avoided.

A post-mortem examination revealed she died from a large gastric bleed from an ulcer.

The inquest at Bradford Coroners Court was examining whether opportunities to prevent Mrs Parkes death were missed.

Mrs Parkes, a great-grandmother who suffered from type two diabetes and Alzheimer’s, was visited by a district nurse and an out-of-hours doctor on December 14 2014 before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
