Leading bishops to mark church’s centenary milestone

St John the Divine Church will be reaching its climax in its centenary celebrations.

Since the beginning of March the church on Gooder Lane has been staging a wide range of events and services.

The Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Rev Nicholas Baines, will preach and preside at a special benefice Eucharist service on November 29.

On Friday evening The Bishop of Huddersfield, the Rt Rev, Jonathan Gibbs, will attend a fellowship evening, described as an informal evening, when along with some entertainment he will also give a talk.

The evening will also mark 100 years to the day since the new church of St John the Divine was consecrated by the Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Rev George Rodney Eden.

This will be followed on Saturday by a Messy Church history day when there will be two open sessions from 10am to 11.30am and from 2pm to 3.30pm.

On offer will be Christmas crafts, quizzes, fun activities, role play, songs and music for children of all ages.

In addition there will be tours and talks related to the church 100 years ago, as well historical items, slide shows, old and contemporary photographs.
