Liquidators put club on market

Blakeborugh Sports and Social Club was put into liquidation in April with Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint liquidators of the well known club on Bradford Road in Brighouse following its failure to pay a £55,000 debt to HM Revenue & Customs.

Their assets including Albion Bowling Club is now on the market.

Peter Sargent, from Begbies Traynor said it was difficult to say how long the process would take, but said the sale was expected to raise sufficient funds to pay the club’s creditors.

“The bowling green has now gone up for sale through Walker Singleton with offers being welcomed until August 22.

There has been some interest from people wanting to but it and re-establish it as a bowling club and others shown interest to knock it down and use it for housing.”

Other assets that the Blakes club own include the building on Bradford Road and the football ground of Brighouse Town on St Giles Road.

Mr Sargent confirmed that the in the past the site has been earmarked as a possibility for housing, but the ground is ‘a long term project’ but an agreement is still in place for Brighouse town to use it.

Following a winding up order at the High Court in August 2014, business advisers Begbies Traynor were appointed to sell off the assets of Blakeborough Sports and Social Club.

Mr Sargent, added: “While it is sad to see the demise of a much-loved and longstanding local amenity, the club has considerable assets in the form of the main clubhouse, a bowling green and Brighouse Town’s football ground.”

“Agents will be instructed to secure the sites as appropriate and advise on the sale, but we are confident that the sale of the assets will raise sufficient funds to pay the club’s creditors.”

The sports and social club has had a turbulent past with problems dating back to 2008 when the club decided to sell the bowling club, Albion, in Halifax Road, to settle its debts.

The decision met with opposition from members of the bowling club with significant legal costs being incurred as they contested the plans. Despite finally obtaining permission to sell Albion, this never happened.
