M1 motorway to be closed overnight

Motorists face delays as work to upgrade the M1 near Wakefield to a ‘smart motorway’ continues.

The £120m Highways England project aims to reduce congestion and increase capacity between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse.

As part of the works, the southbound carriageway will be closed at junction 42 at Lofthouse overnight on Monday, July 20.

The ‘managed motorway’ project will see hard shoulders become permanent lanes in both directions, between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse.

Speed limits will also be varied depending on the amount of traffic and will be displayed on overhead signs and on verges.

It is due to be complete by September.
