Charity worker and former drug addict John Edwards, 61, spent 72 hours in a coffin buried at the Threeways Centre in Halifax to highlight the plight of people with substance abuse problems.

He spoke to around 200 people over the weekend three his phone and the Internet, with the intention of providing counselling to prevent needless deaths, and was watched by people from as far afield as Iceland, America and Australia.

Following his exhumation, Mr Edwards said: “It was incredible, it was far above and beyond what we expected. It went viral all over the world.

“I felt claustrophobic but I tried to discipline my thoughts. It was exhausting and you feel quite vulnerable in there.

“But there was a great sense of responsibility. People texted and sent messages on Facebook who were going through depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts, relationship problems, marital problems.”

A team was on hand to support him and he received food and water through a pipe. A second pipe was connected to a caravan toilet.

The coffin was 8ft long, 3.5ft high and 4ft wide (2.4m x 1m x 1.3m).
