Men jailed for death of popular Todmorden butcher

Mr Stansfield, 48, was killed in March 2015 when he was struck by two vehicles as he crossed a road in the town.

Reports at the time said that he had been hit by a black Audi A3 and an silver coloured Toyota Yaris near to the Duke of York pub on Halifax Road.

Mr Stansfield was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fiaz Shah, 27, of Burnley Road, Todmorden, and Mohammed Islam, 30, of Wellington Road, Todmorden, both pleaded guilty to causing his death by dangerous driving at an earlier before a judge at Bradford Crown Court.

Today (Friday) at Bradford Crown Court, Shah was jailed for six years and Islam was jailed for four years and eight months.

They were both disqualified from driving for the duration of their sentence.

Mr Stansfield, 48, worked for family-run firm J T Stansfield and Son in Halifax Road.

When he featured in a television programme with illusionist Derren Brown several years ago, the wider public got a snapshot of the generous personality which had long since endeared him to his many friends in Todmorden, many of whom have paid tribute to him this week on social media.

As a boy Wayne was a member of the 13th Calder Valley Cubs and Scouts at Cornholme, and later the 20th Calder Valley Venture Scouts, playing a full role in the movement as he grew up. His many interests in later life included playing in several of Todmorden’s indoor games leagues.

He went to Todmorden Grammar School, later Todmorden High School, leaving to train with his dad James, whose butcher’s shop, J. T. Stansfield, was originally at Water Street, Todmorden, with his brothers Sean and Dean. Later the business moved to its Halifax Road premises.
