Everything we know about the Elland bypass closures and roadworks until August

A programme of work from Ainley Top roundabout to the A6026 Wakefield Road at the Calder and Hebble junction will be carried out by Calderdale Council from Tuesday May 26 2020.

Here is everything we know about the roadworks

What work is taking place?

The work involves the planing and resurfacing of the carriageway surface, plus maintenance of safety barriers, street lighting and drainage.

The work will be split into four sections, each of which will be closed for a three week period to ensure the safety of road users and the workforce.

When will the work be completed?

The work is due to be completely finished by Friday August 14

Why has Calderdale Council decided to fully close the bypass in the day?

The 24/7 closure option was chosen in preference to overnight closures, due to the reduction in the amount of traffic on the roads at present.

The Council has said this will reduce the overall length of the works from 18 weeks to 12 weeks and minimise disruption for neighbouring residents.

Where and when will the closures take place?

The closure sections will be as follows:

· Section 1 – Northbound: Ainley Top roundabout to Elland figure of eight junction closed Tuesday 26 May to Friday 12 June

· Section 2 – Northbound: Elland figure of eight junction to Calder and Hebble junction closed Monday 15 June to Friday 3 July

· Section 3 – Southbound: Calder and Hebble junction to Elland figure of eight junction closed Monday 6 July to Friday 24 July

· Section 4 – Southbound: figure of eight junction to Ainley Top roundabout closed Monday 27 July to Friday 14 August

Signed diversions will be in place via Elland-Riorges Link.

Access for emergency vehicles and pedestrians (where normally permitted), will be maintained at all times.

What have Calderdale Council's leaders said?

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Coun Jane Scullion, said: “This major route into Halifax is one of the busiest roads in the borough. This essential work will ensure the road surface is fit for purpose and reduce the need for further repair work in future.

“The work has been scheduled for some time, but we’re taking advantage of the quieter roads to complete the work more quickly. Workers will be adhering to strict COVID-19 safety measures throughout.

“The work will be split into sections to minimise disruption, however we ask those who need to travel to allow extra time for their journey, to take into account the necessary diversions.

“We’re aware that this is also a key road for Calderdale Royal Hospital, so access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.”
