Letter: Route showcases countryside

The route of this delightful walk was published a few months ago in the Courier in January. However, we decided that to enjoy the scenery and views at their best, we should wait for an improvement in the weather and for the blossoming of the spring flora and fauna. And what a good decision; we were not disappointed.

The route was a relatively easy seven mile stroll in the spring sunshine, starting in Cullingworth and following the Millennium Way along Harden Beck through the extremely picturesque Goitstock Wood. We circled round and picked up the Calder/Aire Link which took us through Wilsden and then on to the highlight of the walk, Hewenden Viaduct and Reservoir, before returning to Cullingworth.

The spectacular masonry constructed viaduct, opened in 1883, is about quarter of a mile long and is one of the highest in the country. A viewing platform at its most northerly end provided a vantage point for views of Keighley to the north and Queensbury to the south.

This lovely scenic walk showcased our beautiful local countryside at its best, with bird life in abundance, including a couple of grey herons, spotted whilst walking along the streams and reservoir.
