1. Origins of town's name
The name for Brighouse is thought to be Middle English and come from Bridge House and originates from a building on, or close to, the bridge over the River Calder. Brig is old dialect for bridge.
2. Twinned with Germany
Brighouse is twinned with the German city of Ludenscheid. The link was founded back in 1950 by the Brighouse Children's Theatre which exchanged visits with a similar group in Ldenscheid.
3. Home to top brass
The Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band was formed in 1881. The band has won countless awards over the years and in 1977, the band reached number two in the UK Singles Chart with their recording of "The Floral Dance", where they stayed for six weeks
4. Small beginnings
The bustling town of Brighouse that we know now was once a hamlet of nearby Rastrick. Now the Brighouse ward has a population of 11,195 (taken from the 2011 Census).
