Calderdale woman smashes target amid ‘gruelling’ 100-day challenge

A Calderdale woman has taken on an extraordinary challenge after an idea came to her during the borough’s coronavirus lockdown.

Chloe Richmond, from Brighouse, has been keeping fit and raising cash for Overgate Hospice, in Hullenedge Road, Elland through cycling 20km a day for 100 days.

The challenge was undertaken on June 8 during before summer and she has already smashed her target of raising £1,000.

She said: “Come rain or shine I’m cycling 20km a day to raise money for Overgate Hospice.

“My family tried to convince me to do fewer days, or a shorter distance.

“But to hit my £1,000 target I had to go the whole hog and make it a gruelling challenge.

“I enjoy cycling but have never done anything on this scale and although some days are harder than others seeing how the community is supporting me.

“The donations are spurring me on to put in the extra effort.”

Through social media Ms Richmond had seen the challenges that Overgate were acing in light of Covid-19 knowing that all the major fundraising events had to be cancelled and the retail shops closed.

Ms Richmond emphasised the importance of Overgate Hospice to the local community and the difference the team provides to local people and their families living with life-limiting illness.

While out on her bike Ms Richmond has had family members joining her.

The challenge has even seen Ms Richmond’s old school friends reach out to her, after many have been inspired to get back on their bikes and hit the open road.

“I’ve heard wonderful stories throughout my challenge and I’m so proud to encourage other to cycle and fundraise,” she said.

Rachel Lumb, Hospice event and challenge fundraiser, said: “This is a mammoth challenge that Chloe is undertaking to raise money for Overgate Hospice.

“It’s taken a lot of time, energy and commitment.

“Myself and the Hospice team are incredible proud of her and we’re excited to virtually celebrate with her once she has completed her 100 days and crosses that finish line.”

Chloe is aiming to finish her journey on September 16 and will have ridden over 1,300 miles.
