Stansfield Grange was a mill owner’s home until it was converted into a hostel for women mill workers in the 1920s, and many people attending the library had been previous hostel residents.

The book, written by Ruth Beazley, follows on from her exhibition “Triangle Mill Sisters” which has been touring Calderdale libraries since 2014.

The exhibition won the Womens’ History Network community prize and gives a unique insight into the experience of women mill workers.

The impact that William Morris’ worsted spinning mill had on the village of Triangle over 350 years is described in the book, along with tales from the Stansfield Grange hostel.

It is based on a collection of photographs by Ted Fenton, of Sowerby Bridge, and interviews with hostel women, most of whom were from the north east of England.

Sponsors of the exhibition are the Community Foundation for Calderdale, and the book and website has been funded by Accent Group Ltd.

A website, www.stansfield-grange-triangle.co.uk, complements the book with additional material, memories and more of Ted’s images.

The exhibition can be seen at King Cross Library, Halifax until October 25 and the book is available from King Cross, Central Halifax and Sowerby Bridge libraries and Triangle Post Office.
