Experts reveal ten top tips for sleeping in hot weather as heatwave continues

As temperatures are set to rise even more over this weekend and early next week, Brits are being given some advice on how to sleep comfortably in the warmer nights.

Experts at Online-Bedrooms have given their tips on staying cool, which include chilling your socks and keeping a spray bottle by your bed.

There are a few things that can be done in the day to prevent homes from overheating before bedtime, like keeping blinds closed and allowing cold air to flow through the house.

Of course there are also some quick fixes for keeping yourself cool while tossing and turning in bed like putting on cold socks left in the fridge or freezer and running your wrists under cold water.

Nic Shacklock, from Online-Bedrooms, said: “We’re not used to having to sleep in hot weather here in the UK.

"Our houses are super insulated and not many of us will have built in air conditioning in our homes which means that when we do get warm weather, it can often be a struggle to sleep.

“It can actually be really uncomfortable too but there are ways you can minimise your rooms getting so warm so that come evening, you’ll be able to drift off to sleep.

“There are things you can do in the day to ensure your room is cold enough at night to sleep, like closing your curtains to prevent the sun from shining in.

“There are also quick fixes you can do at night to help you cool while you sleep, like putting ice in front of your fan or sleeping in cold socks.”

How to sleep in hot weather:

Keep blinds shut in the day

The sun tends to be the most piercing in the day so keep your blinds and curtains shut in your room to prevent the sun from coming in and making it hot. This should help keep your room pretty cool.

Chill your socks

Sleeping in socks is the last thing you want to do when it’s warm, but putting them in the fridge or freezer beforehand will actually help to regulate the temperature of your body, leaving you feeling cool and allowing you to sleep.

Swap out your bed sheets

Most of us will have heavier bed sheets to keep us warm throughout the year. Try switching your heavier duvet and sheets for something more lightweight.

Allow air to flow through your house in the day

Try to leave your windows open in the day if you are at home and keep all bedroom doors open to allow the cool air to flow through the house. By the evening your upstairs should feel pretty cool.

Run your wrists under cold water

If you find yourself getting too warm and need to cool down quickly, try running your wrists under cold water for a few minutes. This is often recommended for people experiencing anxiety as a way to cool their body down.

Put ice in front of the fan

One popular method for cooling down involves putting a tray of ice cubes in front of your fan or window. As the ice begins to melt, the fan will blow the cool air from the melting ice around the room.

Keep a spray bottle by your bed

You could always give your bedsheets a quick spritz with water if you’re feeling too warm. But be careful not to drench your bedding.

Take a cold flannel to bed

Pop a flannel into the freezer a few hours before going to bed and place it on your forehead as you try to fall asleep. The cold temperature on your head should cool you as you sleep.

Avoid daytime naps

The warm weather can make us lethargic but try to avoid taking a nap during the day. This could add to your trouble of falling asleep at night.

Keep hydrated

One of the key things to do in warm weather is to keep hydrated as your body is already losing water through sweating. Be sure to take some water with you to bed to keep hydrated through the night.
