Thousands of people in Calderdale were hit by a power cut last night.

The blackout hit nearly 40,000 addresses in Calderdale and Kirklees, including many in Lightcliffe and Hipperholme.

Northern Powergrid has contacted customers today to say the power cut was caused by a fault on their network.

"To get the power back on quickly and safely, our control team remotely switched the power back on in stages,” it has said.

"Some customers may have experienced further disruption, where the power went off again before we got it back on.

"This was part of the control room team switching the power on. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this caused.

"Our team were deployed to the location of the power cut to investigate, get the remaining customers’ power back on, and are back there today continuing investigations before commencing repairs.

"We don’t expect you to experience any further power cuts.”
