Tragic death of Elland cyclist remembered with auction of rare memorabilia

Father-of-two Mr Speight sadly died from his injuries sustained in a bike crash on August 4 last year.

Organisation 3RT Cycling were set to do a memorial ride to celebrate the Elland cyclist's life, but due to Covid-19 restriction there will be a auction of a very rare and unique piece of cycling memorabilia.

Spokesman for 3RT Cycling, Chris Iredale said: "Due to Covid restriction we’ve not been able to go-ahead this year with our memorial ride to celebrate Darren and raise funds for Darren Speight Trust.

"Instead, we've organised a special Chris Froome auction to celebrate the end of the Giro d’Italia 2020 and continue celebrating the life of our friend Darren Speight, we're offering the chance to claim this very rare and unique piece of cycling memorabilia.

"A little over a year ago, we lost our good friend Darren to a tragic cycling accident.

"3RT have raised money to support his family since then and we’ll be doing it again through our silent social media auction.

"This is not a presentation jersey, but is a rider issued Maglia Rosa, given to the leader of the Giro to wear during the race, whose eventual winner was Chris Froome for Team Sky after an incredible comeback.

"We open the bidding with £400 from from Luis, 3RT club member and will update on the current maximum bid when we can."

The jersey is set and framed, signed by Froome himself and supported by images from during the race taken by Calderdale photographer Russ Ellis, also including a certificate of authenticity which is on the back of the frame.
