“This recent crisis has highlighted just how devastating Covid-19 has been to older people and this is why I have chosen the Old People’s Welfare Committee as my charity for this year.

“Once again our community has come together to help one another, with those who are able, providing assistance to people in at-risk groups who are self-isolating or social distancing and unable to shop, socialise freely or mix with others”.

The Old People’s Welfare Committee is an organisation that has been at the forefront helping others.

Its website www.opwc.org.uk has been a valuable resource for those in need of help and has set up ways to connect people with others who are also isolating or distancing, through telephone trees, letter writing, book clubs, and other virtual ways of socialising.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Mayor’s charity can do so via the Mayor’s charity bank account.
