The “Catnapped 2014” event is raising money for The RSPCA Inspector Andy Thompson Memorial Cattery and is taking place at the animal centre on Wade Street until 4pm.

In total, 20 resident and staff from local business have been catnapped. “Victims” will spend up to four hours - a minimum of one - in a cat pen and are unable to leave until they raise £500 for the cattery, which is celebrating its tenth birthday and was named after the late RSPCA inspector Andy Thompson. The person who raises the most money and stays in the cat pen for the full four hours will be given the “Top Cat” trophy. The charity hopes to raise £10,000.

Branch treasurer Kath Airey, who has volunteered to be catnapped, said: “I have been a trustee for over 20 years so have seen first hand the cruelty and neglect that the animals in care have endured, the cattery is always full especially at this time of year with mum cats and their kittens.

“The branch is an independent registered charity and therefore we have to rely on raising our own income, so this is a novel event and hopefully I will achieve my target.”

During the last ten years the cattery has been packed to capacity with over 5,500 feline residents. Some have stayed only a few days, others months. Many have suffered neglect and abuse, before they ended up in the cattery.
