Poised to a trip down memory lane

Brighouse is poised to take a trip down memory lane as Brighouse prepares to host the eagerly awaited spectacular 1940s Weekend once more.

The clocks will be turned back 70 years to the bygone days of the home front, make do and mend, dance music and variety shows.

This year’s event uses the 70th anniversary of VE Day as its theme.

Millions of people rejoiced in the news and in towns and cities across the country, people marked the victory with street parties, dancing and singing.

This year’s Brighouse 1940s Weekend aims to recreate some of that party atmosphere and bring you an extraordinary weekend of family fun.

The streets will be filled with music, dancing and displays. Twice as many performers will bring the 40s hits to life all around the town. A new dance area has been created and many new displays along with a vintage market will all add to the enjoyment.

Highlights include a RAF flypast on Saturday, parades around the town on both days, boat trips on the canal, steam train rides and a new real ale bar. The evening line up consists of three dances, a play and a variety show.

John Buxton, a member of the Brighouse Business Initiative organising team said: “The pleasure seen on the faces of the crowd as they dance, sing and chat to their friends makes people proud to be in Brighouse. Brighouse is now known all over the country for the Forties weekend and visitors will be coming from places as far away as Holland.”

Steven Lord, another of the organisers, added: “This year we’ve managed to pack in even more entertainment for all the family. The full programme of the weekend’s line up is now available in the form of a replica 40s newspaper. It costs £1, with all proceeds going to fund the event, and is available in many outlets around town.”

Tickets for the evening shows and dances are available from Harrison Lord, Simply Flowers and Ryecorn Wholefoods. See www.brighouse1940sweekend.co.uk for more.
