Plans for 174 new Brighouse homes rejected amid contaminated waste fears

Concerns over moving contaminated waste and the impact on a key traffic junction persuaded a slim majority of councillors to reject plans to remediate an old quarry site and build 174 new homes on it.

Calderdale Council planning officers had recommended councillors should be mindful to permit Strata Homes’ proposals for the former Southedge Quarry at Brighouse Road, Hipperholme, subject to planning conditions and the signing of a legal agreement.

Planning Committee councillors were worried about contaminated material being moved from one part of the site to another.

As a result, the waste has been asked to be remediated before building new homes, and to be mindful of the impact it will have on traffic on road junctions at Hipperholme and Brighouse, with the former regularly resulting in tailbacks.
