Former Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher dies

Former Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher has died aged 87 following a stroke.

She was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990 and was the first woman to hold the office.

Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker said: “It is a sad day for Britain. She was a character and one of Britain’s most famous Prime Ministers.”

Baroness Thatcher became the Conservative MP for Finchley, north London in 1959. She retired from the Commons in 1992 after presiding over the introduction of the Poll Tax and the Falklands War.

She won general elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987.
