Libraries and centres get Wi-fi connection boost

Visitors to libraries and leisure centres in Calderdale will soon be able access web information on their smart phones and tablets, as free Wi-Fi is being introduced in a number of Council buildings across the borough.

More buildings will have Wi-Fi installed by spring this year, including Sowerby Bridge, Elland and Brighouse Libraries and Halifax, Brighouse, Todmorden and Sowerby Bridge Leisure Centres.

By installing Wi-Fi, visitors to Calderdale libraries can access a wealth on information, not only through the vast array of books and library computers, but now also on their own tablets, laptops and smart phones.

Staff can also support visitors to help access the full range of library facilities.

For instance, if you have an eBook reader, library staff can help you access the new eBook service, where you can browse and download from a choice of over 400 free eBook titles.

At gyms and pools, visitors can use the Wi-Fi to access podcasts or stream media while exercising, to book classes and check times or to just relax after a workout and catch up on social media.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Councillor Marcus Thompson, said: “Libraries offer more than just books, CDs and DVDs. They have become the gateway to a whole range of materials for both education and enjoyment.

“Having the flexibility of Wi-Fi means that customers can find what they need quickly and easily without necessarily having to use the fixed computers in place in the library.

“Increased connectivity will be a welcome addition to the great facilities already on offer in our libraries and sports centres and will open up a world of opportunities, allowing visitors to access more resources, information and support.”
