£90k to be spent on parking backlog

Money has been allocated from Calderdale Council’s budget to tackle a backlog of parking and traffic issues.

The motion was passed at a Cabinet meeting on Monday after a catalogue of problems with parking in the borough.

The council will spend £40,000 on temporary staff to work through the backlog, and a further £50,000 for consultation and implementing new schemes.

Councillor Barry Collins, member for regeneration and economic development, said: “We are proposing to spend £90,000 so that the difficulties we have got into in the past don’t occur again.

“I’m absolutely clear in my mind that it is a priority for this council to ensure that we can work quickly and effectively.

“There have been noticeable improvements in highway service in recent weeks. I hope that councillors will recognise this.”

One thing the council plans to do with the increase in spending is to map street lights and bridleways.

Coun Collins (Lab) said: “We are planning on mapping all the current street lights and some of the bridleways, so we can make intelligent decisions in the future.”
