Yorkshire-based literacy charity Reading Matters will be using its annual conference in Brighouse to explore new ways of bringing literacy to life for children.

Liz Pichon, award-winning author and illustrator of the Tom Gates novels, will be the headline speaker at the all-day conference that aims to give new ideas about how to stimulate children’s literacy development.

Liz will speak on how the Tom Gates books came about, what influenced her and how she never expected to be an author.

Other speakers at the conference include Tom Palmer, children’s author and avid sports fan, Mairi Kidd, the director of publisher Barrington Stoke and Rob Smith of The Literacy Shed.

Rachel Kelly, chief executive of the charity, said: “We are delighted that Liz Pichon, our new patron, will be joining us for the conference.

“Liz’s books really motivate children to read for pleasure as they are funny, honest and full of great illustrations”.

There will also be workshops running throughout the day and exhibitor stands.

The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn, Brighouse on Thursday, July 9 from 9am-3.30pm. The cost per delegate is £110 and includes access to the full day event with speakers, choice of workshops, exhibitors, lunch, goody bag and a £50 Reading Matters voucher.
