Rugby league star turns bake off judge

Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Danny McGuire made a special trip to the Harrogate offices of Stowe Family Law to judge the final of the firm’s annual baking competition.

In homage to popular TV show The Great British Bake Off, members of the firm compete to impress each other with their culinary skills as the show progresses, bringing into each office an imaginative selection of sweet treats carefully laboured over the night before.

Last year’s winner, by popular vote, was Managing Director Charles Hartwell.

But this year the firm decided to move the competition up a gear. Stowe Family Law Senior Partner Marilyn Stowe is a confirmed Leeds Rhinos fan, and after meeting the popular half back at a recent fundraising dinner for the teams’ community foundation, she invited him to judge the final.

Danny, 32, happily agreed, and scheduled a special trip to the gym “so I don’t feel too guilty tasting all the great cakes.”

Executive assistant Chantal Wilkinson scooped the prize, for a sparkling Italian Orange Cake. She took home an eye-catching Stowe Family Law Star Baker apron.

The worthy runners-up were Facilities Manager Russell Clarke, Tash Burton – Managing Partner of the firm’s Wilmslow office, and Trainee Solicitor Charlotte Newman.

Stowe Family Law have made a donation of £2,250 to the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, a charity which works to support communities across Leeds. Meanwhile, Danny took along a signed rugby ball for the event.

Mrs Stowe said: “We’d all like to thank Danny for taking time out of his busy schedule to come and visit our offices. We hope he enjoyed our bakers’ amazing efforts.”
