Storm Desmond expected to batter country

The fourth named storm of the season - Desmond - is forecast to bring severe gales to Yorkshire this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a weather alert warning that the strong winds are likely to cause some travel disruption.

Driving conditions will be difficult and trees could be brought down.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: “A depression is expected to deepen and move towards Iceland during Friday, with the associated frontal zone expected to affect the UK throughout Friday and Saturday.

“Southwesterly winds will gust 45-55 mph quite widely across the area, with the risk of more than 70 mph on coasts and hills. Whilst they will decrease for a time on Saturday, they will increase again later on Saturday, coming down from the west on Sunday.”

Storm Desmond follows hot on the heels of storms Abigail, Barney, and Clodagh, which have swept across much of the country in recent weeks.
