Crews called to fire at Elland Bypass

The skies over Rastrick and Elland were lit up last night due to a grass banking fire off Calderdale Way.

Firefighters were called to the incident, which stretched 400 metres by 200 metres, at 6.45pm last night (Wednesday).

Crews from Elland, Huddersfield, Dewsbury and the wildfire unit from Heckmondwike attended the incident, just off Pinfold Lane.

They used a water relay and water shuttle system to provide water for a hose reel to tackle the fire as there was no fire hydrant near to the scene.

After setting up a safety cordon, crews left because of bad light at 10.45pm, but an appliance from Elland returned this morning at 5.30am and used water back packs and beaters to out the remaining embers. They left the scene at 7.30am.

Nobody was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
