“We’ve got crews there from Pontefract, Normanton, Featherstone, Castleford and Wakefield.”

She added: “All persons are accounted for. No one has been injured.”

15 fire engines were brought in to help tackle the blaze.

Pictures posted on Twitter show huge billows of smoke from the plant.

Smoke is blowing across the M62 between junctions 32 and 33, causing slow-moving traffic in both directions. The A1(M) is also affected between junctions 41 and 42. And the B6136 at Stranglands Lane in Knottingley is closed, with slow traffic in both directions between the Castleford Lane junction and the Stranglands Lane junction.

The fire meant the 148 and 150 bus services are being diverting via the 149 route service to Knottingley.

The Ferrybridge site is on the banks of the River Aire east of Leeds.
