These Calderdale roads are set to be surface dressed next month

Construction work is classed as an essential service and key repair and maintenance work on roads in Calderdale is continuing to go ahead where safe working procedures can be followed.

A planned programme of surface dressing work will be taking place as originally scheduled. Weather permitting, the work is due to start on Monday 4 May on Saddleworth Road, Elland, from Elland Bridge to Long Wall.

The carriageway surface will have bitumen and stone chippings applied which will seal it to prevent water ingress and improve the surface texture, prolonging the life of the road for many years. This process will require a road closure (7am-6pm) to ensure the safety of the workers.

Following this, further work will take places at the times and locations listed below:

· Monday 4 May – B6112, Stainland Road, Holywell Green

· Tuesday 5 May – A6033, Keighley Road, Hebden Bridge

· Wednesday 6 May – A644, Brighouse and Denholme Gate Road, Shelf

· Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 May – A629, Keighley Road, Halifax

· Wednesday 13 May – Towngate Avenue, Highmoor Crescent and Birdswell Avenue in Clifton

· Wednesday 13 May – Ashville Gardens and neighbouring roads, Pellon

· Wednesday 13, 14 and 15 May – Roads around Elland town centre, including Catherine Street, Burley Street and Saville Road.

Closures are in place from 7am-6pm at each location, but generally the work will be completed in a much shorter time and roads will reopen as soon as possible. Please be aware that the work is very weather dependent, so dates are subject to change.

Contractors will be following strict government guidance while carrying out this work. This includes maintaining a two metre distance between workers (or working in pairs if this isn’t feasible) and following strict hygiene regulations, such as regular hand washing.

Throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, Calderdale Council is also working with utility companies to ensure that vital services like water and electricity can quickly be reinstated if any problems occur. The Council is also relaxing some usual timing and traffic management restrictions to ensure that work can be completed as quickly as possible and the network is maintained for key workers.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Coun Jane Scullion, said: “We’re closely following government guidance to ensure that any works to our road network can be completed quickly and safely.

“This resurfacing programme was scheduled before the COVID-19 outbreak and we aim to carry it out as planned. As roads are quieter at the moment, this should also minimise any disruption caused by the works.

“We’re also relaxing usual timing restrictions for utility repair works to ensure that vital household services are maintained or quickly resolved, as we all stay at home.

“As always, we ask all residents to follow the government’s latest advice and only travel where absolutely necessary, keeping the roads clear for essential users and deliveries.”
