Warning over discarded cigarettes after two grass fires

Todmorden Fire Service is warning the public to take extra care when discarding cigarettes after they were called to two grass fires yesterday (Saturday).

The first occurred at just before 5pm on the embankment of the Summit Tunnel in Littleborough.

After spending more than an hour putting out the fire, the crew were then called to another grass fire above Hebden Bridge at a steep wooden embankment.

Crew Commander James Priestley said: “While we have the nice weather people need to be more careful with discarded cigarettes on the ground, especially with such dry weather and in grassy areas.”
