Tributes to former mayor

Stanley Firth, 88, died on September 1, following a long stay in hospital.

Mr Firth was born in Brighouse in 1926 and spent the majority of his life in the town.

He had a stint in the navy from 1943-44 and spent some time in London while training to be a teacher.

Once his training was complete he moved back to Yorkshire and taught at a number of primary schools in the area, before taking up a headship at St Chad’s Primary School. He retired in 1983.

He married Jean Rayner in 1951 at St John the Divine Church in Rastrick and they made their home at Granny Hall Park, Brighouse.

They went on to have one son, Nicholas, who was born in 1956.

He was also heavily involved in political life in the town. He became a councillor for Hove Edge in 1963 and was Brighouse’s mayor from 1971-72.

He left politics following the local government reorganisation in 1974.

Mr Firth was also a Freemason and was master of the Brighouse Lodge from 1972-73 and was also chairman of the Brighouse Ludenscheid Society from 1973 for around 20 years.

Throughout his life, Mr Firth was a member of various other organisations including the Lions, Rotary and Probus.

He was a regular churchgoer and attended St Martins Parish Church for a number of years.

Mr Firth’s funeral will be held at St Martins at 12.15pm on Tuesday, September 15.
