Met Office issues amber warning for gales

A vigorous area of low pressure is expected to move northeastwards across northern parts of the UK later today, say the Met Office.

It is expected to bring a swathe of southwesterly gales across many areas which may be severe in places.

A first peak in the winds is likely over southern and southwest England around the middle of Wednesday but with the main swathe of even stronger and potentially damaging winds crossing parts of Wales then northern England later in the day.

The public should be prepared for the the risk of disruption to transport and possibly also power supplies.

Overnight, there has been snowfall on higher ground and there are icy patches on the roads with policing urging drivers to take extra care.

The M62 exit sliproad at J22 A672 Rishworth Moor is now re-opened after being blocked by a broken down car before 7 am.

Some bus services were withdrawn last night due to snow on higher ground but all services are now running normally.

A replacement bus service is running on Northern Rail between Hebden Bridge and Burnley Manchester Road due to engineering works.
