Busy Turner’s title success

The 14-year-old was too strong and fit for Eastburn ABC’s Hamza Urfan on a bumper 18-fight bill at Ladyship Mills, Ovenden, in his first outing of the weekend.

He then moved on to Havecroft Sports Centre, Wakefield to face Abdul Saheed from Sheffield Lane Top ABC and he landed the cleaner shots in a scrappy fight to win unanimously.

It is the second title Turner has won for Halifax this season. The last one took him all the way to the national finals.

The Halifax show featured four Yorkshire Junior Championship semi-finals, two guest bouts and 11 contests featuring home club fighters.

The host club managed six winners, their highlight arguably being a unanimous win for young Daniel Finchett against plucky Hebden Bridge ABC boxer Tyler Brocklehurst.

Kyle Scully had a massive bout against the Tyne and Wear champion Korey O’Neill from Forest Hall ABC in Newcastle. Scully showed his quality by winning on points in what was a very skilful fight.

Jake Fawthrop lost his unbeaten record to Sandygates ABC’s Harvey Fletcher in a very close battle. The Halifax boxer looked good but lost on a split decision.

Seb Cowley won his second contest in a row by out boxing Littleborough ABC’s Joseph Vaughan.

The juniors had raised the bar for the adult Halifax boxers with their great performances.

Ashley Aked kept up the good work with a class performance. Aked has been out of action for nearly two years due to work and family commitments but still dominated all three rounds to win unanimously.

Jimmy First was in the main event and was up against a very good Littleborough ABC fighter in Richard Healm.

Healm boxed superbly in the first two rounds but First’s fitness shone through and he out-worked the Littleborough boxer, who visibly tired in the four round fight.

The Halifax boxer dominated the last two rounds with Healm struggling to stay on his feet.

Finchett won the junior boxer of the night award with Scully taking the senior equivalent.

Club chief Mick Rowe said it had been an excellent show in front of a sell-out audience.

“It is all down to the hard work of the boxers and coaches,” said Rowe, who thanked Baxendale & Vanzie Solicitors for sponsoring the trophies.
