They rediscovered their mojo following some below-par performances to avenge a recent heavy Yorkshire Shield defeat at Springheld Lane.

The Hipperholme side had 10 changes to the one on duty in the Shield and their backs had a cutting edge with Zak Thompson scoring twice, Rob Jennings filling in well at centre and Dom Georgiou and Michael Briggs also impressing.

The home side kicked off against a stiff breeze and scored an early try when the speedy Olly Dynan chased a clever chip from the base of a loose ruck to touch down. The conversion was added by Clayton McCloud.

Brods’ defence, led by skipper Olly Akroyd, was strong and the Hipperholme side worked their way into the game.

On 13 minutes, following good handling in midfield, Alex Dawson put Georgiou in the clear with an excellent-defence splitting pass. Georgiou timed his pass perfectly to Zak Thompson and the young winger finished in fine style wide on the left. Akroyd pulled the sides level with an excellent conversion.

Brods failed to take advantage of the strong wind but were winning the scrummaging duel and dominating the lineout through the ever reliable Bob Sykes.

Jennings was competing well at the ruck and earned a penalty which Akroyd opted to kick at goal.

The ball hit a post but Hullensians knocked on from the rebound. Brods won the ball at the resulting scrum but lost it and flying winger Josh Langford went the length of the field. McCloud converted to make it 14-7.

Brods responded positively and Georgiou, in a rich vein of form, showed great pace to break the defence and the cover to score in the left hand corner.

Georgiou and Thompson linked up to go close but half time arrived with the game in the balance.

The visitors camped on the Hullensians line after the break and clearly had the momentum. Brods were awarded a scrum five metres out and took full advantage with a powerful drive. Akroyd touched down to give his side a 17-14 lead.

Brods continued to dominate but gifted their hosts a try in the 50th minute. The Woodhead side won a scrum but a poor pass led to a loose ball, which was snapped up by the scavenging Hull forwards who restored their side’s advantage.

An Akroyd penalty reduced the areas at 21-20 and Brods dominated the final quarter.

Georgiou and Thompson linked down the left and the latter touched down in the corner. Controversially the touch judge raised his flag and the try was disallowed.

Brods were not to be denied and with five minutes left they attacked down the left and their backs had too much pace for the defence, Thompson scoring his second to the delight of the visiting supporters.
